ASOIAF: Transformation and growth
How Asoiaf Makes Us Better storytellrs
Good storytelling is all about transformation and growth. A story should impact its audience that should shift their thinking; make them feel different after experiencing it. Just like the characters themselves.
I’m looking at five incredible characters from A Song of Ice and Fire, and how they’re growth and transformation can help us reflect on ourselves.
Jaime’s journey seems to be him learning be his true self; not living in the image of what others perceive him as, but living to his core values and doing what he believes to be the right thing.
Sansa’s next major story development I’m expecting will be all about her revelations. She is primed to find a way to protect herself from Littlefinger; and it will all be because she discovers the truth.
Bran’s story is about losing yourself. He now lives underground with the 150 year old wizard, Bloodraven. That name is so fucking cool. And Bloodraven is guiding this young one, seeing time through the weirwood trees and out the eyes of animals. But will Bran become like Bloodraven? A seer who’s grown into the tree? Or will Bran become something far more magical?
Tyrion is going to be bad. According to GRRM Tyrion will be a villian. Or already is one. I think that Tyrion’s story; they treated him like a monster and so he became one most terrible; will teach us a lot about cruelty and hatred, and unnecessary violence.
Daenerys is the hero of ASOIAF. I am so looking forward to a grounded story about a person who triumphs over literal evil forces and brings as many people as she can to safety and self defense. Daenerys is my boo!
